Long weekends, BBQs, fireworks and fun-long weekends are made for memory-making! Whether you’re heading to a backyard party, relaxing at home, or watching fireworks light up the sky, a little planning can go a long way to keep things safe, stress-free, and full of joy for everyone-especially our four-legged family members.
Here are some helpful tips to make your holiday weekend safe, festive, and pup approved!

Celebrate Smart
Enjoying a holiday weekend doesn’t have to mean overpacking your schedule. Plan for balance: a little adventure, a little relaxation, and plenty of time for things (and people) that make you smile. Whether you’re sipping iced lemonade by the pool or catching a late-night firework show, carve out moments that feel like the sweet life to you.
Ideas for a fun weekend:
- Host a small backyard BBQ with festive décor.
- Make themed treats (S’mores bites, anyone?)
- Take a scenic morning walk before it gets too hot.
- Enjoy a summer movie night under the stars.
- Watch fireworks from a cozy spot with snacks and a blanket.

Firework Safety for Dogs
Let’s be honest- fireworks might be fun for us, but they can be terrifying for dogs. Loud noises, flashing lights, and unfamiliar activity can send even the calmest pup into panic mode.
Here are some ways to keep your furry friend safe and calm:
- Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area indoors where your dog can relax. Include their favorite toys, a cozy blanket, and a movie or music.
- Don’t leave them alone outside: Make sure your dog is safely indoors before the fireworks begin. Even well-trained dogs can panic and escape when frightened by loud booms.
- Update their ID Tags: In case they do manage to slip out, ensure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date.
- Try Calming Tools: Thunder shirts, calming chews, or dog safe essential oil sprays can help ease anxiety. Always check with your vet for recommendations.
- Stay Calm Yourself: Dogs pick up on our energy. Stay calm, speak softly, and offer extra cuddles if they need them.

Beat the Heat
In places like Arizona (shoutout to my fellow desert dwellers!), summer holidays can get hot. Make sure both you and your pup stay hydrated and cool.
For you:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
- Take breaks in the shade or AC.
For your dog:
- Keep fresh water available at all times.
- Limit walks to early morning or evening.
- Avoid hot pavement-it can burn their paws.
Final Thoughts
Holidays are a time to celebrate and create joyful memories, but the best ones are the safe, thoughtful kind. With just a little extra planning, you can enjoy a long weekend filled with fun, family, fireworks and wagging tails.
